Parking access and directions
We have created two maps for easy access to our hotel which you can download. Small grey car park indicators can be found on each entrance road into Fontevraud l’Abbaye. Hotel La Croix Blanche is located opposite the abbey, however the car park is situated at the back of the building accessible via a residential area leading into a one way street towards our car park.
The Loire Valley Unesco World Heritage area covers approx. 170 km – here are some interesting sites for you to discover.
At 100 yards : the vast Royal Abbey with it’s delightful architecture and the effigies of Richard the Lionheart, Eleonor of Aquitaine, Henri II and Isabelle d’Angoulême. Local artists will be delighted to welcome you into their work shops: a medieval enlumineur, a jewellers, an upholsterer, a stain glass windows artist). Many itineraries for walkers (local paths as well as GR3) and the La Loire à Vélo cycle paths for cyclists.
At 2 miles: the village of Montsoreau with it’s magnificent castle overlooking the Loire, enjoy a river boat ride in a traditional wooden boat or bargain at the monthly ‘brocante’ and ‘puces’ market. The delightful village of Candes St Martin is worth a detour too, walk up to the panorama to look out over the Loire and Vienne rivers.
At 4 miles, discover the troglodyte village of Turquant, houses and artist work shops have been partly built into the rock walls and created inside caves!
At 7 miles, visit Brézé castle, a beautiful castle built on top of an underground troglodyte castle dating back to the Middle Ages. At Montreuil Bellay, another privately owned, castle dominates the town.
At 10 miles, the city of Saumur with its famous castle and Cadre Noire horse riding school. In summer horse drawn carts and river boats provide alternative ways of transport too. Saumur boasts the biggest tank museum in the world. Don’t forget the well-known sparkling wine either: Bouvet-Ladubay, Ackerman, Veuve Amiot, Louis de Grenelle, Langlois Château … An interesting outdoor food market on Saturday mornings, shopping every day except Sundays.
At 12 miles, go and discover the charming medieval town of Chinon on the banks of the Vienne river. An impressive fortress, the historic quarters and small shops provide a really authenic feel. Market on Thursday. As around Saumur, Chinon also has many vineyards and wineries. Ask us for our favorites !
At 18 miles, Sleeping Beauty’s castle at Rigny Ussé, the typical ‘pommes and poires tapées’ at Rivarennes, Rivau castle and it’s not-so French gardens.
At 20-50 miles: many privately owned and famous Loire Valley castles such as : Villandry, Azay le Rideau, Chenonceau, Langeais, Angers, Tours, Brissac and Loches.
Three theme parks at approx. 1 to 1.5 hr drive: Terra Botanica (Angers), Le Puy du Fou (south of Cholet) and Futuroscope (Poitiers). Troglodyte Zoo at Doué-la-Fontaine at 25 mins.
